Take Me to the Alley

It’s still Easter Season.

It’s still that season of hope and faith that death can be overcome.

When I think about our April missional themes of Humility and Servanthood and how they relate to Jesus, my mind often takes me to this song by Gregory Porter called “Take Me to the Alley.”

The song is about a city preparing for the arrival of The King. They are cleaning everything up, making everything shiny and new looking.
But The King surprises them all by not even noticing the work done to prepare for His arrival.

He simply says: “take me to the alley”

He doesn’t care about what everyone else seems to be worried about. Shiny homes, spotless streets and glamourized people are of no interest to Him. Out of His humility and servanthood He demands to be brought to those who are hurting, sick, poor and homeless. He wants to go to the alley where folks are lonely and lost.

That’s where His heart is.

And that’s where we want our hearts to be as we continue to strive to be The Hand of God in the Heart of the City.

Happy Easter Season,
Dion

Meditate on the lyrics of Take me to the Alley
by: Gregory Porter

Well, they guild their houses in preparation for the King

And they line the sidewalks
With every sort of shiny thing
They will be surprised
When they hear him say

Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me to the lonely ones
That somehow lost their way

Let them hear me say
I am your friend
Come to my table
Rest here in my garden
You will have a pardon

Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me to the lonely ones
That somehow lost their way

Let them hear me say
I am your friend
Come to my table
Rest here in my garden
You will have a pardon

They will be surprised
When they hear him say
Take me to the alley
