Truth and Reconciliation Day reminds us of the historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities, injustices that birthed the beginnings of losing Home.
As we approach this day of remembrance, reflection, and reconciliation, let us pause to acknowledge the complex intersectionality of faith, homelessness, and the ongoing journey toward healing, truth and reconciliation.
Our mission implores us to be a transforming influence in the communities of our world. This means understanding the unique challenges faced by Indigenous people experiencing homelessness, a population that is overrepresented. Many have been displaced, their connection to their land and culture severed.
Understanding the deep-rooted connection between historical strategies to eliminate Indigenous Peoples and the current crisis of homelessness among Indigenous communities is essential. In Toronto, approximately 23% of the homeless population are Indigenous, despite them constituting <1% of the total city population. This directly stems from Canada’s history of colonization, the exploitation of Indigenous land and communities, and policies aimed at assimilating or eradicating Indigenous Peoples.
As we strive to be “The Hand of God, in the Heart of the City,” we work not only to acknowledge their history, but to actively move towards healing and restoration.

Prayer
Let our hearts for prayer and reflection include repentance as well.
Give us the strength to confront the injustices of the past and the wisdom to walk hand-in-hand toward a just future. In our collective reflection, give us the inspiration to act, to be the hand of God in a world that desperately needs reconciliation. Let us be beacons of hope and agents of change. Let your love be a guiding light, illuminating the path toward reconciliation, understanding, and healing. Amen
